What I'm Packing in my Hospital Bag

What I'm Packing in my Hospital Bag

Packing a hospital bag can feel like a daunting task, especially if it’s your first time. But as a third-time mum, I’ve learned a few things along the way that have made this process much smoother. Today, I’m sharing my ultimate hospital bag checklist, filled with Australian products to ensure comfort, convenience, and peace of mind during your hospital stay.

Essentials for Mum

  1. Comfortable Clothing:

    • Maternity Gowns and Robes: My robe is the 'Snug Robe' from Chille, which is so warm and comfortable (plus super cute). I also brought along some comfortable slippers so I don't have to wear my shoes during labour to wander around the birth suite.
    • Maternity Underwear: Modibodi’s range of comfortable and absorbent underwear is a lifesaver post-birth. I also packed a few disposable postpartum underwear from TOM Organic.
  2. Toiletries:

    • Organic Skincare Products: I’m a fan of GAIA Natural Baby for gentle, natural skincare.
    • Shampoo and Conditioner: Travel-sized bottles of Sukin’s nourishing shampoo and conditioner are perfect for the hospital.
    • A detangling brush... I repeat, a detangling brush!! I used the Lady Jane Flexi-Glide brush after my last baby and it so effortlessly removed all the knots and tangles from rolling around during labour.
  3. Nursing Essentials:

    • Nursing Bras: Comfortable and supportive bras from Target.
    • Breast Pads: I’m packing both disposable and reusable options from Haakaa to stay dry and comfortable.
  4. Self-Care Items:

    • Essential Oils and Diffuser: A portable diffuser from Lively Living Australia with calming lavender oil to create a relaxing environment.
    • Lip Balm: A hydrating lip balm to keep my lips from drying out in the hospital air.

Essentials for Baby

  1. Clothing and Blankets:

    • Onesies and Sleepers: Soft, organic cotton onesies and singlets from Purebaby.
    • Swaddle Blankets: Muslin swaddles from Aden + Anais for easy wrapping.
  2. Nappies and Wipes:

    • Eco-Friendly Nappies: A pack of eco-friendly nappies from Ecoriginals.
    • Baby Wipes: Gentle wipes from WaterWipes to protect baby’s delicate skin.
  3. Feeding Supplies:

    • Nursing Pillow: A supportive nursing pillow from My Brest Friend to make breastfeeding more comfortable. (I didn't end up bringing this with me, but it has been super handy for at home.)
    • Silverettes: To promote healing of any nipple damage.
    • 100% lanolin to soothe and protect cracked nipples.

Comfort Items for Labour

1. Birth Ball:

Mumma Ball: My trusty birth ball from Mumma.Co for staying comfortable during early labour.

2. TENS Machine: The TENS machine from Olive Juice Lifestyle is a great tool for managing pain during labour.

3. Massage Oil:

Clary Sage Oil: A soothing massage oil from Perfect Potion to help ease labour pains.

4. Snacks and Drinks:

  • Hydrating Drinks: Coconut water and electrolyte drinks to stay hydrated.
  • Healthy Snacks: Protein bars and dried fruit for quick energy boosts.

    Important Documents and Extras

    1. Documents:

      • Birth Plan: Printed copies of my birth plan, including preferences for a C-section if necessary. I have a downloadable birth plan template coming soon, keep an eye out!
      • Important Information and ID: All necessary documentation in a folder.
    2. Tech and Entertainment:

      • Phone and Charger: To stay connected and capture those first precious moments. Bringing my extra long charger cord!
      • A portable speaker: For playing music during labour.
      •
      • 3. Comfort Items:
      • Pillow from Home: My own pillow for a touch of home comfort.
      • Blanket: A cozy blanket from Sheridan for added warmth and comfort.
