Birth balls are a wonderful tool for pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care, offering comfort, support, and gentle exercise. To ensure your birth ball is safe and doesn’t burst, here’s a guide on inflating it properly with a hand pump.
1. Find a Safe Spot
Set up in an open space free from sharp objects or rough surfaces that could damage the ball. A soft surface, like a carpet or yoga mat, is ideal for added protection.
2. Check Your Pump and Ball Valve
Make sure your hand pump’s nozzle fits the ball’s valve. The hand pump that comes with your Mumma Ball is a perfect fit! Insert it securely before starting to pump so air flows smoothly without leakage.
3. Inflate Slowly and Steadily
Begin inflating your ball gradually. Take pauses to let the material adjust as it fills. Rushing can create pressure spikes that might stress the ball’s material. Slow and steady wins the race here!
4. Check for Correct Size and Firmness
Birth balls typically come in sizes like 55 cm, 65 cm, and 75 cm. Our Mumma Ball is 65cm and can hold up to 120kg (maximum) We will hopefully have a size 75cm ball coming very soon! Use a tape measure to check the diameter. The ball should feel firm but have a bit of give when you press it with your hand.
5. Avoid Over-Inflating
It can be tempting to make the ball as firm as possible, but over-inflating increases the risk of bursting. If you’re new to using a birth ball, consider inflating it slightly under the max size; a bit of softness can help with balance.
6. Secure the Valve
Once your ball is the perfect size, remove the pump nozzle carefully and insert the plug fully into the valve. This will prevent air from escaping and keep your ball in great shape.
7. Do a Final Safety Test
Before using your ball, sit on it gently to check stability and comfort. It should feel supportive without being too rigid.
Helpful Tips:
Don’t leave your ball in direct sunlight or near heat, as this can weaken the material over time.
To find the best firmness level for you, try different inflation levels until you feel comfortable and secure on the ball.
Following these steps will keep your birth ball safe and ready for all the amazing support it can provide during your pregnancy journey!
